My great grandmother and her mother were both called Abina, in their case, it is a diminutive of Abigáel (Abigail) -een, -ene, ín and ína are typical female diminutive or family/loved one nickname endings in Southern areas of Ireland, particularly around County Cork & County Waterford. ‘Little’ not size, just showing closeness or sweetness.
Abi(gáel) + ína – Abina (Little Abbie)
Cáitlín – Kat leen (Little Catherine, Katie)
Colleen – Cáile (girl) + een = little girl
Marleen Sharlene Kaylene are all examples of this structure that is not so common in Ireland today but evident in Irish diaspora communities in Australia , New Zealand, Canada and of course, the USA
