The structure of Ancient Greek Names
Ancient Greeks had no middle or last name; they were identified by their unique first name and the ethnicity or city they came from along with the patronymic name of their father. (Herodotus of Halicarnassus–‘Ηρόδοτος ο Αλικαρνασσεύς’, the historian who lived in Athens).
Most Ancient Greek names are dithematic (of two elements) either simple derived from a noun or adjective along with a suffix e.g. Philippos-‘Φίλιππος‘, from ‘philli’ (friend) and ‘ippos’ (horse).
