My name is Mahalia, I am 23 years old residing in pittsburg ca. Growing up as a child and preteen I used to think I was LITERALLY the ONLY girl OTHER THAN Mahalia Jackson with this name lol 😂. Now here I am 14 years later and know I most definitely am NOT the only one. Although at first this realization was a bit saddening for me, I now love learning and finding out about others with this name as well. Growing up I hated when people pronounced it incorrectly ESPECIALLY my teachers. Kids used to make fun of it as well and this made me for a very SHORT period HATE my name. After sitting with my great grandmother (who gave my mom the idea for my name) she taught me where it came from and who I was named after (Mahalia Jackson) and to embrace and love my name. I am a 6foot 2inch tall Mexican PuertoRican NativeAmerican Female and I LOVE my name and the history that comes a long with it. I will continue to teach others and keep learning things about my name. I am Mahalia.

My name is Mahalia. My midwife gave me that name and she was a black woman. She told my mother it means strong black woman, and if she was able to have a daughter she would’ve name her Mahalia also (she only had sons). In relations to Mahalia Jackson being a strong black woman it was perfect name for me.

Mahalia is my name. I am a 7th generation Mahalia and my daughter is the 8th. t is not pronounced as “mah HAH lee ah”; I absolutely hate when people mispronounce it like that. It is pronounced “mah HAY lee ah” or “mah HAIL yah”; either is suitable- the latter being the more Southern (U.S.) pronunciation. And while it is a Hebrew name, which means “tenderness”, and is derived from “Mahalah” in the Bible, it is also a Native American name meaning “Woman”. A frequent nickname for Mahalia is “Hayley” or similar spellings of that name. The Queen of Gospel Music, Mahalia Jackson, was often called “Hayley” by her close friends.
